Now that we’ve experienced our first snowfall of the winter here in the Northeast, we know why it’s important to have a plan to clear the snow around our homes and businesses. While it had been a while since our last big storm, this past snowfall is a good reminder that we can get a decent amount of snow in our area and it’s important to be prepared!
When it comes to deciding which product to choose, there are a ton of options. The most popular options are rock salt and ice melt. While they both accomplish the same goal of melting snow and ice, they work differently and have different positives and negatives.
Allow us to share our knowledge of the subject with you so that you can make the best decision on which product is best for your home or business.
Rock Salt vs. Ice Melt
Rock Salt: What exactly is rock salt? Rock salt (halite) is the same as sodium chloride, just in the form of a mineral. Rock salt is used to melt snow and prevent ice from forming by creating a brine-like substance. Since this substance has a lower freezing point than water, it melts snow and prevents ice from forming. The result is a “mini rock-like” formula that also works to create good traction on driveways and walkways.
For the most part, this is a great product to use. It’s not expensive and is usually readily available. Certainly, something to purchase at the beginning of the winter season before the snow is more apparent as it can be one of the first products to sell out of when a snowstorm is coming.
There are two things to keep in mind if you decide to use rock salt. It can be harmful to plant life, so if you do use it, make sure you are not putting it near any plants. Another potential con to this product is the effect that it can have on our pets. Rock salt can cause gastrointestinal issues in animals if they eat it. Make sure that if you do use rock salt, it is nowhere near where your pets could reach it!
Ice Melt: The other option to melting your snow and ice is called ice melt. This product is made from magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, or sodium chloride. The most common form of ice melt is calcium chloride. The way that this product works is that when placed on ice or snow, it lowers the freezing point of water, thus causing it to melt.
The positive attribute of ice melt made from calcium chloride is that it is safe for plant life and your pets. Also, in addition to creating a similar brine that rock salt creates, it generates a chemical heat that works faster than rock salt.
